Bring along your board games, dice games, card games or whatever… on the afternoon of SUNDAY 29th JANUARY. Jenga, Dominoes and Yahtzee have already been promised! This is a chance to meet your fellow members - and new members are welcome to join on the day. Tea coffee and fruit cake will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own 'wine and nibbles' if you prefer.
The venue is the Wavertree Garden Suburb Institute in Thingwall Road - just 200 yds from Queens Drive or 10 minutes' walk from the Picton Clock.

We are fortunate to have, within our area, one of Liverpool's oldest-established and best-loved community centres - the Wavertree Garden Suburb Institute in Thingwall Road. Converted out of two 18th century farm cottages, and opened in 1912 as a 'temporary club house' to serve the residents of the new co-partnership housing estate, it has remained open almost continuously as a venue for social gatherings, musical entertainment and drama. Recently, however, major repairs to the roof structure have become necessary, which the trustees of the building found they could not afford.

After due consideration, our own Committee decided to contribute the sum of £2,000 from our own reserves towards these repairs - which, although a relatively small proportion of the total cost, at least enabled the WGSI trustees to authorise the work to go ahead. We are pleased to have assisted the restoration of a Grade II Listed Building in this way.

The appeal fund is still very much open - the trustees gratefully acknowledge other donations from the Col.Pilkington Trust, the Duchy of Lancaster and several private individuals - and, if you would like to help, the person to contact is Nicholas Wood (Hon.Treasurer, WGSI) at 190 Birchfield Road, Widnes WA8 9EF, tel. 0151 424 7108.
