20th-21st MARCH 2010

BBC Radio Merseyside is once again sponsoring a Local History show in the magnificent surroundings of Liverpool's St George's Hall. A wide range of organisations, including the Wavertree Society, will be mounting exhibitions and meeting visitors to tell them about different aspects of Liverpool's history, answer enquiries, sell publications and recruit new members. The Weekend will also include a series of talks by guest speakers. The opening hours are 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday, 20th-21st March. (We shall be sharing a table with the Gateacre Society. Wavertree Society committee members will be 'on duty' on the Saturday, and Gateacre members on the Sunday). Admission costs £3 per person (or 2 for £5) with 75% of the ticket proceeds going to the Lord Mayor's charities. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Civic Trust - the national charity with which the Wavertree Society has long been associated - hit financial difficulties last year, and went into administration in April. Since that time, strenuous efforts have been made to establish a replacement body that can represent local civic societies like ours at the national level, and assist us in our day-to-day activities. The result is 'Civic Voice', which is to be officially launched on 17th April 2010. In order for the new body to be financially viable, and resistant to outside influence, it is asking local societies to join, the fee proposed being £1.50 per Society member for the first year and £2 for the second year. In view of the fact that our own membership subscription is only £2 a year, we shall clearly not find this easy, and the Committee will be discussing possible solutions.
