Our next meeting:

A discussion evening
on Wednesday
27th January
with Martin Hudson

at the Olive Mount
Community Centre,
Edgewell Drive,
Liverpool L15 8GG
starting at 7.30 p.m.

The 'heart' of Wavertree is the High Street and Picton Road. Its image, to people from outside the area, is a mixed one, made up of historic frontages interspersed with modern shopfronts and austere security shutters. The stretch from the Clock Tower to Rathbone Road is a Conservation Area, where in theory steel shutters are banned but in practice, it would seem, 'anything goes'.

At our Annual General Meeting last October, we briefly discussed what could be done to improve things. One suggestion is to paint the shutters, choosing a range of colours agreed with the Council's conservation officers and incorporating logos or stencilled shapes reflecting Wavertree's history, landmarks and trades.

Martin Hudson, who lives in Wavertree, was volunteer director of a High Street improvement project in West Kilbride, Scotland. He is a lecturer at John Moores University and a Blue Badge tourist guide. Via his involvement with St Barnabas Church, he is planning an improvement scheme for the shopfronts around Penny Lane. We have invited him to come along and give an illustrated talk about what he has done - and to lead a discussion about what we could do to improve the High Street and Picton Road frontages.

All welcome - Admission free - Donations invited
